The Salmon Farm was established after Sir Neil saw the opportunity to transform the large lakes which had formed naturally in the Harewood quarry. The lakes had formed due to Canterbury’s high water table and underground aquifers which contain very pure water.

Whilst the Salmon Farm has produced upwards of 170 tonnes of fish per year, supplying supermarkets and restaurants throughout New Zealand, today's operation is significantly smaller growing approximately 15 tonnes per annum. This operation is based around The Isaac Wildlife Trusts' commitment to supporting Fish & Game New Zealand and their annual "Take a Kid Fishing" day at The Groynes.

Salmon Lifespan

Young salmon, known as smolt, are purchased from a specialist hatchery aged 5 to 6 months. Over the following 18 months, they are fed a diet of fortified fishmeal and progress through the complex ponds at the farm. The pond water is constantly tested for purity by an independent laboratory. The salmon are harvested in their prime condition from 2 to 3 years, weighing anywhere between 1.5 and 7kg each.
